Swedish development cooperation is mainly performed through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) in Georgia and is governed by the Results strategy for Sweden’s reform cooperation with Eastern Europe, the Western Balkans and Turkey for the period 2014-2020. Cooperation with Eastern Europe comprises the countries included in the Eastern Partnership (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine). Sida’s activities in Georgia are expected to result in the following:

  • Enhanced economic integration with the EU and development of market economy. Sweden is supporting Georgia in better fulfilling EU requirements for entering into and applying the association agreement, including deep and comprehensive free trade area. Some examples of support in this area are: the cooperation project between the Swedish land registry agency (Lantmäteriet) and its Georgian counterpart National Agency of Public Registry, technical assistance to the National Statistics Office of Georgia through Statistics Sweden and core support to the policy institute of International School of Economics Tbilisi (ISET-PI), focusing on policy research in relevant areas.  In the area of SME development, Sweden is supporting EBRD’s project “Women in Business” (regional).
  • Strengthened democracy, greater respect for human rights and a more fully developed state under the rule of law, focusing on strengthened public administration, increased enjoyment of human rights and greater opportunities to exercise democratic influence.  Sweden supports the implementation of Georgia’s Public Administration Reform through the Governance Reform Fund, administered by UNDP. The support to the Public Service Development Agency focuses on the efficient delivery of urban and rural services, based on principles of nondiscrimination, equal rights and with emphasis to fight corruption. In the area of gender equality, Sweden supports the joint efforts by UNDP, UNFPA and UN Women focusing on the implementation of the country’s national action plan on gender equality. Sweden provides broad support to civil society organizations and is also present in the breakaway region of Abkhazia, through its support to UNICEF and KvinnatillKvinna.
  • A better environment and reduced climate impact and enhanced resilience to environmental impact and climate change. Sweden is supporting Georgia in increasing compliance with EU and international agreements on the environment, climate and energy. Examples of cooperation in this area are: World Bank trust fund for sustainable wastewater management in Georgia, contributing to the construction of wastewater treatment plants in Tskaltubo and Telavi; construction of landfills in Adjara and Kvemo Kartli through EBRD (regional) cooperation between the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture on waste management; the Clean-up Georgia project promotes awareness raising on environmental issues among the public and decision-makers.
